Why Does my Prescription Expire? My Vision has not Changed!

Eye doctors recommend regular check ups at least once every two years, and even more frequently for those wearing eyeglasses and contact lenses. State board recommendations vary between different states, but generally glasses prescriptions are only valid for two years, and contact lens prescriptions are typically only valid for 1 year (some states may vary). Even those who feel that nothing has changed should have regular check ups. Our bodies and our eyes are constantly changing and an eye check will make sure that your prescription lenses or glasses are giving you the best possible vision. It is hard to discern any small deterioration in our own eyesight, but an eyetest will quickly detect these. Also, if vision has changed in one eye, the other eye may be compensating for it, so the patient is not aware of the deterioration. Left unchecked this can cause eyestrain, headaches and nausea. During an eye examination the eye doctor will also check for overall eye health. It is most important that the doctor gets the opportunity to check your eye health as many eye diseases can occur without any warning signs. The doctor will measure the intraocular pressure, testing for the warning signs of glaucoma and they will look for first signs of macular degeneration, which if undetected can result in permanent loss of sight. They will also check for any signs of cataracts. In addition, since there are so many new inventions and advances in technology, an annual eye exam will allow the doctor to update and offer the latest technology to you.

Eye Glasses Prescriptions
During a regular check up for those wearing glasses your eyesight will be checked, both with and without your eyeglasses to make sure that the prescription is correct. If a significant change is detected, then a new prescription will be issued. A glasses prescription will be valid for two years. It cannot be valid for a longer period as a new eye test should be taken before ordering glasses as small changes may have occurred since the last. The purpose of a prescription is to order glasses to be made to give you the optimum vision possible. After one year this may not actually be the case as your eyesight may have changed again. Most people suffer changes in their eyesight in their early forties when presbyopia occurs. This change in near vision means that small print cannot clearly be read close up. It is common to see people suffering with presbyopia holding something at arm's length in order to focus. It is important that glasses prescriptions are current. You may otherwise be wasting your time and money by having glasses made for how your eyes were, not how they are actually are now..

Contact Lens Check Prescriptions
Regular eye checks are even more important, and are required more frequently for those who wear contact lenses. As the contact lens are considered a medical device and it is worn right on the eye, they must always fit well and have the correct fine tuning including the axis, sphere and cylinder if there is astigmatism. During a regular check up for those wearing contact lenses, your eyesight will be checked, both with and without your lenses to ensure that the prescription remains correct. If a significant change is detected, then a new prescription will be issued. A contact lens prescription will only be valid for up to one year. After that a new eye test should be taken before new contact lenses are ordered as small changes may have occurred in the interim. The purpose of a prescription is to prescribe contact lenses, which will give you the optimum vision possible. After one year this may not actually be the case as your eyesight may have changed again. During their early forties, many people suffer changes in their eyesight when presbyopia occurs. This change in near vision means that small print cannot clearly be read close up. You will have seen people suffering with presbyopia holding something at arm's length in order to focus. It is particularly important therefore that contact lens prescriptions are current. You may otherwise be wasting your time and money by having contact lenses made for how your eyes were, not how they are actually are now. Besides updating the prescription, yearly contact lens exams are particularly important for the health of the cornea. As contact lenses are considered a foreign object that is worn on the eye itself, if worn inaccurately, it can cause eye infections and decrease in oxygen to the eye. A yearly exam is essential to ensure proper eye health.

Minimum prescription length

"A contact lens prescription will only be valid for up to one year"

Please state the law that says they can only be valid for one year. In the US, the FCLA states the MINIMUM prescription length is one year (except for extenuating, justified medical circumstances where it can be less). Aside from potential state to state laws, where do you find that contact lens prescription cannot be longer than one year?

Rx

It's all geared at buying at optometrist owned store......optometrist are now scam artists.

I'm in Massachusetts and my Dr. gave me a 1yr Rx, my son got a two year from a different Dr. So much for being consistent in the same state!

This is not a controlled substance. I can get reading glasses from the dollar store! These Dr's should be happy my I'm using my insurance to get an exam.

Eyeglass prescription expiration

I really don't understand this. I am almost 59 years old. Although my previous lenses were still fine as far as my vision was concerned, they were falling apart a bit so i had my eyes checked and they felt I needed a new prescription. I really just wanted my old prescription in new frames. But noooooo, so I got my new glasses and I can barely function, I feel like I am watching a 3D movie without 3D glasses. I would have been happy to pay whatever they wanted for my old prescription that was still fine. This seems like kind of a ridiculous situation to me, no other physician can force their opinion and treatment on you, why should ophthalmology be able to?

Say no to greedy doctors

Buy the eye glass online. You enter the number you want.

Expiring RX's

all the comments above show the IQ of our country. One person says optometrists are "scam artists" Yeah ok, we make $3 on the "commodity of contacts" you dumbazz. We make the money on PROFESSIONAL fees (fitting). moving along to the next Dumbazz. IF you graduated high school, you would know we treat sooo many infections (that can lead to scarring and permanent vision loss) from kids over wearing POOR fitting contacts. So you are a hero parent trying to show your kid how you saved a small fee while he goes blind. You are the parent who SUES the dr. bc your kid has scarring from contacts they purchased at their office. BUT complained when the dr. wanted to see your ugly kid every year to catch the issue.

Contacts versus glasses

I believe most complaints were about eyeglass prescription, not contacts. Here in NC, I wanted to get new blue light filter lenses on my computer glasses, but my prescription expired a week and a half ago and my doctor wouldn't extend it. So I guess I will keep wearing the glasses without the blue light protections for as many years as I want until I get a new prescription filled?? I just had the same prescription filled right before it expired for distance glasses. So a week and a half makes all the differences? Contacts are a different matter because of bacteria, amoebas, ect...

You show how poor one's

You show how poor one's thinking skills can be. even with a degree. YOU'RE NOT ABLE TO BUY MORE CONTACTS until you PAY an OPTOMETRIST to give you another EXAM. Ya know? Those professional fees you mentioned. So you didn't think about that too well, or you did and you're just a liar. You're all a bunch of greedy, liars.

yes

yes yes please tell me how your 'professional fitting' is what distinguishes you guys apart. handing me a pair of contacts and telling me to put them on and then asking if they feel ok is not a professional fitting smh. tailers actually do work when they professionally fit something.

?

You sound real professional, you moron.....or should I say DUMBAZZ!

What a scam!

I scratched my glasses that still work GREAT! I called and can't get a replacement set because it's been 3 years. I have had this happen before and I end up borrowing money I do NOT have. So now I drive with scratched lenses, having to look around them with impaired vision FROM the glasses. This industry is so evil, especially for old people on fixed income. It's like you hold open your pockets with one hand and give us your middle finger with the other hand. You should be ashamed. Your statement is Doctor and State Boards "Recommend" getting eye exams every two years. That's great for people with money but for people who can't afford it, that is simply not an option, so what then?!?
